The area
Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta in Bali) grew from a small surf village into the south coast's main town. It has cafés, restaurants, surf schools, coworking spaces and the island's liveliest evenings outside the Gili Islands.
Along the beachfront to the east lies Mandalika, a government-backed special economic zone with international hotels and the Mandalika street circuit, which hosts MotoGP. Lombok International Airport is around half an hour's drive away.
Beaches and surf nearby
- Tanjung Aan: a wide double bay of pale sand and calm water, with a hilltop viewpoint.
- Seger and Bukit Merese: rolling headlands known for sunrise and sunset views.
- Gerupuk: a bay of surf breaks reached by boat, for beginners to experienced surfers.
- Mawun: a sheltered horseshoe bay to the west.
The property market
Kuta has the deepest rental market on the south coast and the widest range of property, from guesthouses and apartments to hillside villas with ocean views. Demand comes from surfers, digital nomads, families and event visitors.
That maturity comes at a price: land and villas around Kuta are generally the most expensive in South Lombok, and competition between rental villas is stronger than in quieter bays.
